Great Cow contest: vote now!

Postby JayHerron » Wed Mar 04, 2015 1:10 pm

The Jersey Jounal is currently accepting votes for the preliminary round of the Great Cow Contest. There are two polled cows that have been nominated. I would love to see one or both of these cows make it to the final round, but they need votes to get there. http://jerseyjournal.usjersey.com/Great ... inees.aspx

Bill Maness of Jersey Origins was kind enough to provide some additional information on the polled nominees:

Polled Cows in the 2015 Jersey Journal Great Cow Contest

Among the 51 nominees for the 2015 Jersey Journal Great Cow Contest are two polled cows, one whose impact in bringing the polled trait into wider acceptance in the breed has been ongoing for many years and the other one beginning to have a similar impact. Voting, with a deadline of March 15th, is by ballot (provided in the February 2015 Jersey Journal) or online through the Jersey Journal website.

Kamefield Observer Mischief-P is nominated by Dutch Hollow Farm, LLC, where she was developed after her purchase as a bred heifer (in 1976). The nominating ad (Page 85, February 2015 Jersey Journal) may be viewed at: http://jerseyjournal.usjersey.com/GCCAd ... Hollow.pdf

She completed six lactations, including the first 20,000 lbs. milk record at Dutch Hollow, and had four daughters and one son registered (in the days before commercial E.T. availability). Through her daughter Dutch Hollow Banner Mistress-P she is the 3rd dam of Dutch Hollow Pal Madam-P.
“Madam-P” provided only three daughters, but from each one a significant impact branch of this cow family has been developed. Dutch Hollow Lester Madam-ET (not polled) was developed by Cheryl Carlson at Wetumpka Jerseys, and is the MGD of Wetumpka Alf Margo, who was acquired by Dutch Hollow, giving rise to the impact cow Dutch Hollow Louie Charity-ET. Maternal sisters Dutch Hollow Lester Mischief-P-ET and Dutch Hollow S Joe Mistress-P (the other two daughters of “Madam-P”) were developed at Dutch Hollow. Dutch Hollow Barber Milady-P-ET, daughter of “S Joe Mistress-P” was sold as a heifer to Den-Kel Jerseys, where she headed their development of a number of impact polled AI bulls and profitable polled females.

From “Lester Mischief-P” the most prolific branch of this cow family has been developed. She is the dam of impact bulls “Choice-P”, “Option-P-ET”, “Brendon-P-ET”, “Direct Deposit-P-ET”, and “Magistrate-P-ET” and also Dutch Hollow B Masquerade-P-ET, who was an AI bull mother and the dam of numerous impact polled females.
On a pedigree basis, Kamefield Observer Mischief-P received the polled trait from her MGD – Kamefield Superb Molly-P – a daughter of Fair Weather Champion Superb-P. The dam of “Molly-P” was bred by the Chamberlain family, Hi-Land Farm, Wyoming, NY, arising from their most significant impact cow family, developed in their herd since the 1930’s. The imported female that gave rise to this maternal line was born in 1878 and imported in 1880.

Hillview Headline Keylime-P is nominated by Sorenson Hillview Jersey Farm, Inc., where she was bred, and continues as an important part of their milking herd and breeding program (born in 2010). With two natural daughters and a dozen E.T. calves to date, her nominating ad may be viewed at: http://jerseyjournal.usjersey.com/GCCAd ... ew%20Jer... and also notes that she has additional E.T. calves coming, and is pregnant for her 3rd calving.

She ranked as the #4 Polled GJPI cow on the December 2014 genetic evaluations. Her oldest daughter Hillview Louie Katiki-P sold in the 2013 National Heifer Sale to Dutch Hollow Jerseys LLC, where she has already become an effective E.T. donor dam. At the 2014 All American Sale a “choice of flush” from “Keylime-P” was third high selling female. Her maternal brother – Headline Eclipes Key Lingo-PP – has been released as a genomic young sire by Liberty Jersey Sires (AJCA Regional Young Sire group) in cooperation with Taurus Service.

The polled trait was added to this deep maternal line through Circle S Atlantis Koral-P, 5th dam of “Keylime-P”, who was sired by Meri-Acres Duncan Atlantis-P-ET (7JE259). His 3rd dam – Wyndcrest Belle June-P – was sired by Normsland Belle Boy-P, thus the polled trait comes forward to “Keylime-P” from a different source than for Kamefield Observer Mischief-P. The direct maternal line behind “Keylime-P” was bred in a series of New England herds, back to the historic Elm Hill Farm of Brookfield, Massachusetts and descends from a cow born on Jersey Island in 1921, imported in 1923.
Dehorned at conception!
